Abstract: - The study seeks to investigate the management gaps that exist in the University for Development studies and to suggest best practices for effectively managing the institution. It is in the light of this that some thematic areas were identified. The study therefore gathered information concerning some of the challenges facing the various departments, sections and units and suggest some best management strategies from ten thematic areas. The study used the qualitative research design to gather the data. Heads of the various departments, sections and units were interviewed. A number of critical issues emanated from the study however, one major visible finding was that though, every staff was employed based on some special skills, but some of them have not been placed at their specialized areas where they can operate without or with little supervision thereby making them “square pegs in round holes”. It is therefore, recommended that, the University Management Team should develop a “talent Profile” where Management could identify staff with some special skills and place them at the right places where their expertise can be tapped. Author: U. Aja-Okorie
Keyword: Sexual Harassment and Victimization, Legislation, Higher Education, University Management, Nigeria.
Page No: 18-29
Abstract: Abstract The issues surrounding sexual harassment and victimization in the past two decades globally have become a matter of concern and are gradually becoming a public discourse. More so, our higher institutions are becoming breeding ground for all sorts of anti-social behaviours. These have continued to negatively affect academic freedom and excellence. The discourse identified low reporting as a major constraint towards eradication of this evil that has bedeviled our school system. The exact incidents are seldom available coupled with the fact that its’ occurrence is shroud in secrecy many perpetrators go undetected and unpunished. In Nigeria scenario, it appears to be more challenging, because there is no clear-cut legislation that explicitly defines what constitutes sexual harassment as well as no provisions to sanction offenders of sexual harassment and victimization. The paper contends that cases are becoming not only widespread in Nigeria higher institutions but also adversely affecting academic growth. It reiterated that despite its fraught in controversies it contributes to academic setbacks in our higher institutions. It argues that the negative effects on the females are high. The women constitute mostly the victims. It creates low self-esteem in them and invariably contributes to poor participation to academic activities, which can lead to poor academic results and low achievement. It advocates the need for university management to mainstream sexual harassment and victimization into governing policies such as in criminalizing it. University management structures should be strengthened and staff sensitized to mobilize actions towards eradication of sexual harassment and victimization on campus. Government also needs to promulgate explicit laws that specifically address sexual harassment as stiff punishable offences in order to serve as a deterrent to possible offenders. Therefore, this paper defines entrepreneurship education as that conscious effort geared towards the education and development of entrepreneurial knowledge, skill and ability essential in the management of education venture (enterprise). It further explains that self employment role of an entrepreneur serves as key to national transformation. Title: THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SIGN-BASED COMMUNICATION IN THE ADVERTISING/MARKETING OF NIGERIAN PRODUCTS: A USER STUDY
Author: ENDONG, Floribert Patrick Calvain
Keyword: Signs, Semiotics, Effective Communication, Anchorage, Nigerian Product.
Page No: 59-66
Abstract: Communication based on the use of conventional signs is grounded on the faulty assumption that receivers theoretically have capacity to decode the signs being used. Meanwhile, it is not uncommon to fi nd receivers (especially among the laymen) not being initiated into recognizing and decoding these signs. Signs (especially symbolic and indexical in type) have high degree of slipperiness and/or arbitrariness. This obviously creates semantic noise and likely renders communication relatively ineffective. Based on a user study aimed at eliciting consumers’ understanding and capacity to decode selected signs – which are recurrently used in the composition of marketing and advertising messages appearing on the packages of consumer products – this paper shows some limitations (the reduced intelligibility) of sign-based communication. It argues in favour of inter-semiotic translation or the use of anchorages, as strategies aimed at effective communication in advertising and marketing campaign. Title: INFOTAINMENT AS A COMMERCIAL STRATEGY IN MEDIA PROGRAMMING AND MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA
Author: ENDONG, Floribert Patrick Calvain
Keyword: Media Management, Infotainment, soft journalism, media programming, commercial broadcasting, entertainment.
Page No: 90-97
Abstract: - The advent of commercial broadcasting in Nigeria – coupled with the ever existing competition among national media outfits – has motivated most media houses (especially news organizations), to remod el their orientation. Many of these news houses have resorted to infotainment as a strategy to win the patronage of audiences, and in turn, attract advertisers. This paper discusses infotainment as a contemporary trend in media programming and management in Nigeria. It explores the strengths and weaknesses of the practice as well as its implications for media programming and management in the country. Being anchored on Williams Stephenson’s Play theory and the Uses and Gratification theory, it argues that, infotainment merely offers operational advantages to media managers and owners as it involves lesser fund for production and programming than the regular/classical programming formats. The paper also argues that infotainment is, to an extent, suitable for commercial broadcasting as it may attract the youths who theoretically constitute the greatest portion of audiences being targeted by advertisers. Nevertheless, infotainment has some disadvantages: it causes a segregation of audiences into narrower niches; encourages passivity and above all, gives a blow to the credibility of news and educational programs. This credibility is particularly endangered in the case where programs that are supposed to be purely factual are rather spiced up with “paranormal” (entertainment) elements.
